Welcome to the new academic year everyone!

This year CAMSED is launching a reading group aimed at both MPhil and PhD students , which we hope will become a tradition in the department. For Michaelmas term the overarching topic is Freedom and Capitalism. The choice of topic is both topical and relevant for our studies; with the crisis still looming over the developed world, there is increasing disillusionment with the concept of freedom, embodied in a mature capitalist system. On the other hand, as students of development studies, it is important to understand freedom as the core ethical foundation of the liberal economic tradition.

The sessions will take place on Thursdays 2-4pm on October 23th, November 6th, November 20th, December 4th and December 18th. CLICK HERE for the reading list for each session. For our first session on the 23rd of October we will begin with an overview of the basic debate on the conception of freedom.

If you are interested in participating in the group please email Vasiliki Mavroeidi at vm314@cam.ac.uk as spaces are limited. Participants are encouraged to read the required material and come to the sessions full of questions and comments.
